The United States government has started a new refugee policy that focuses on admitting white South Africans, which has led to the resettlement of several thousand people.

This program began after a presidential memo last September, which lowered the total number of refugees allowed per year to 7,500 and gave priority to Afrikaners. According to State Department data, 5,948 refugees have arrived so far this year, and almost all of them are from South Africa. The administration and supporters, such as Elon Musk, asserted that white South Africans face race-based persecution and genocide. However, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and other government officials have denied these claims, emphasizing that the policy is based on politics rather than international law. Furthermore, a group of well-known white South Africans has publicly stated that they do not agree with these claims.

Despite the priority given to these refugees, the resettlement process has faced serious problems. In Ohio, new and strict licensing rules for non-citizens—including required training hours and high costs—have made it difficult for refugees to find work. Consequently, resettlement agencies report that about 50% of South African refugees in Ohio have left the state. Additionally, the federal government reduced cash assistance from twelve months to four months, which has heavily affected this group. Because of this, some refugees have used crowdfunding websites like GiveSendGo to pay for basic needs. These issues have led some religious organizations, such as the Episcopal church, to stop working with the government's resettlement program due to their commitment to racial justice.

The administration plans to increase the refugee limit by 10,000 to allow more South Africans to enter, despite the ongoing diplomatic arguments and difficulties with integration.
