The Town of Truro has set aside money to clear a wooded area near Millbrook First Nation after reports of safety risks and criminal activity in the area.

The Truro town council has approved spending up to $50,000 to remove trash and debris from several acres of town land. Although the site contained temporary shelters and waste, most people had already left the area by the time officials conducted their final checks.

On the other hand, Stephanie Watson from the Truro Housing Outreach Society asserted that these camps will continue to appear unless the government provides permanent, supportive housing. She explained that high rents, a lack of available apartments, and a shortage of mental health services are the main causes of homelessness, which is now affecting more senior citizens.

Mayor Hinton stated that any real solution must include medical services on-site, and she is currently discussing a sustainable plan with provincial authorities and service providers.
