A violent knife attack in north Belfast has caused widespread disorder and anti-immigration protests across Northern Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom.

The trouble began on Monday evening in the Kinnaird Avenue area, where a man in his 40s suffered serious injuries to his face, eyes, and back. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) identified the suspect as a 30-year-old Sudanese man who had been granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028 after seeking asylum in February 2023. The suspect, who entered the country via Dublin, has been charged with attempted murder, making threats to kill, and possessing a weapon. Although the PSNI described the assault as a 'critical incident,' officials emphasized that there is currently no evidence that it was a terrorist attack.

After graphic videos of the attack were shared online—showing people using a sports stick to stop the attacker—organized anti-immigration protests began. These demonstrations were encouraged by far-right figures and social media users, and they soon turned into violent riots. In Belfast, masked individuals set fire to a public bus and targeted homes. Consequently, public transport services were completely suspended and armored police vehicles were deployed. Similar unrest was reported in Antrim, Bangor, and Ballymena, while protests also took place in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Furthermore, the leaders of Northern Ireland's main political parties urged the public to remain calm. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked a political debate about immigration; the DUP and Reform UK argued for stricter border controls. On the other hand, the North West Migrants Forum warned that immigrant communities should not be blamed for the actions of one person.
