A recent study by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) shows that the number of armed conflicts involving governments reached its highest level since 1946 in 2025.

The data shows that there were 65 state-based conflicts, which is the highest number recorded since systematic tracking began in 1946. This increase is caused by the start of new large-scale wars and the worsening of long-term crises, specifically in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. Furthermore, the global political situation is becoming more divided, as interstate conflicts have doubled to eight instances, including tensions between India and Pakistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Cambodia and Thailand.

According to the report, Africa is the most affected region, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe. Consequently, the death toll is very high, with an estimated 245,000 battle-related deaths in 2025 alone.
