British Columbia Introduces Online Knowledge Tests for Learner's Licences

Introduction

The government of British Columbia has launched a new digital method for taking learner's licence knowledge tests.

Main Body

Starting Tuesday, people applying for passenger vehicle and motorcycle licences can take their tests remotely. However, those applying for commercial licences must still take their exams in person. Attorney General Niki Sharma emphasized that this change will make the process more convenient, especially for people living in rural areas. Furthermore, this shift is expected to reduce the number of in-person visits, which will make it easier for drivers to book their road tests.

To take the test, applicants need a computer with a camera and a stable internet connection, as mobile phones are not allowed. To prevent cheating, the province is using a service called Neumo to monitor the user's webcam and mouse activity. Although the 50-question test is now online, applicants still need a minimum score of 40 to pass. After passing, they must visit a licensing office to verify their identity, take a vision test, and have their photo taken.

This project is the first part of a larger plan by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) to modernize its services. CEO Jason McDaniel asserted that the goal is to fully digitize licensing services. Consequently, the government plans to introduce online renewals and replacements for driver's licences and BC ID cards by 2027.

Conclusion

The knowledge test is now available online for certain vehicle types, although final identity and vision checks must still be done in person.
