Recent data from Gallup shows a clear decrease in the moral acceptance of several social behaviors among adults in the U.S.

The May 2026 Values and Beliefs poll, which included 1,001 participants, shows that people are becoming less accepting of certain behaviors. Specifically, approval ratings for five different activities dropped by 6 to 9 percentage points. Birth control, gambling, and animal cloning reached their lowest levels ever, with acceptance rates of 83%, 57%, and 27%. Furthermore, the acceptance of having children outside of marriage fell to 58%, and teenage sexual activity dropped to 35%.

Despite these changes, some behaviors are still supported by the majority. For example, divorce (74%), sexual relations between adults who are not married (65%), and same-sex relationships (62%) remain widely accepted. On the other hand, most people agree that extramarital affairs, human cloning, and polygamy are morally wrong. Meanwhile, opinions on abortion, euthanasia, and animal testing are split almost equally, which suggests that society has not reached a consensus on these issues.

The data also reveals a strong divide between political parties. There is a huge gap between Democrats and Republicans regarding reproductive rights and gender identity; for instance, there is a 55-percentage-point difference in their views on abortion and gender transition. However, Republicans are more likely to support the death penalty (76% compared to 33% for Democrats), as well as the use of animal fur and medical testing. Megan Brenan, a senior editor at Gallup, emphasized that this shift toward conservatism is mainly caused by the changing views of independent voters.
