Pope Leo XIV finished a week-long trip to Spain with several events in the Canary Islands, where he focused on the difficult challenges of irregular migration.

The Pope visited Tenerife and Gran Canaria, which are key entry points for migrants coming from sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. This message came at the same time that the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum was being put into place, a set of rules that human rights groups have criticized because they might make it easier to deport people back to Africa.

According to data from the International Organization for Migration, about 1,300 people died in the first half of 2026 alone. To honor these victims, Pope Leo XIV threw a floral wreath into the sea at the port of Arguineguín. He argued that the lack of concern from European governments toward these deaths is inconsistent with Christian values. Furthermore, the Pope described human traffickers as 'industries of death' and demanded that these criminal activities stop immediately.
