The Supreme Courts of Victoria and Queensland have handled two different criminal cases involving accusations of a contract killing and a domestic murder.

The prosecution asserts that Waden killed Brooten in July 2018 and then hid her body. To support this, they presented evidence of Waden's dishonest messages to the victim's friends and the discovery of a trench on his property. However, the defense argues that the investigation is weak because no body has been found. They suggest that since Brooten suffered from severe depression and often lived a secret life using fake names, it is possible that she is still alive or committed suicide.
