Jaspal Rana, a well-known figure in Indian competitive shooting and a high-performance coach, has passed away at the age of 49 due to heart complications.

Mr. Rana passed away on Thursday in New Delhi. After being diagnosed with blocked arteries, he underwent a procedure to insert a stent at Max Hospital, Saket. Although doctors expected him to recover, he unfortunately suffered a cardiac rupture and died in his sleep. His body was taken to Dehradun, where he was given full state honors, and then flown to Varanasi for his final funeral rites, as he had requested.

Furthermore, he won a gold medal at the 1994 World Shooting Championships. One of his most impressive achievements occurred at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, where he won three gold medals despite having a high fever.

After retiring from competition, Rana became the leader of India's junior shooting program under the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). He emphasized strict discipline, which sometimes caused tension with his students. For example, there was a disagreement before the Tokyo Olympics regarding the strategy for athlete Manu Bhaker, and the NRAI later blamed the team's lack of medals on Rana's influence. However, they reconciled before the 2024 Paris Olympics. Consequently, Rana's coaching helped Bhaker win two bronze medals, which he described as a way to resolve the failures of the Tokyo cycle.
