Mexican federal and state authorities have started an investigation into the killing of Joel Bravo Martínez, the mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán.

The attack happened on Saturday when armed men shot the municipal leader. According to the National Action Party (PAN), the mayor had previously asked for state protection. In response, the Oaxaca state prosecutor's office started special protocols for serious crimes, and the Mexican Security Cabinet sent extra personnel to the area to help catch the killers.

Consequently, political leaders, including Alejandro Moreno of the PRI, have emphasized that these killings are direct attacks on democratic institutions and community peace.
