The Delhi administration has started a series of combined environmental projects and public campaigns to clean up and restore the Yamuna river ecosystem.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), led by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, is working on a phased plan to restore 32 ghats along the Yamuna Bazar. The goal is to turn these areas into cultural and public spaces while improving flood protection and groundwater levels. So far, the DDA has reclaimed 1,425 acres of floodplain and removed about 93,572 tonnes of city and construction waste. Furthermore, they have planted 700,000 native trees and created 35 wetlands to help stabilize the environment.

At the same time, the Delhi government launched the 'Maa Yamuna Tat Swachhta Abhiyan,' a large cleaning project involving 15,000 citizens and various government agencies. This effort resulted in the removal of 116.6 tonnes of waste from 28 ghats. To help with this, the government used special machinery like trash skimmers to remove pollutants. Additionally, the National Green Tribunal has introduced a ₹5,000 fine for illegally throwing ritual materials into the river, a move supported by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to reduce human-caused pollution.

From a management perspective, the project is carefully monitored by high-level officials. Water Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized that the Union Home Minister requires progress reports every two years to ensure a centralized tracking system. Moreover, the Yamuna Task Force from the Territorial Army has been brought in to provide military logistics for the restoration. These actions follow a political commitment made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2024 elections to fix the critical lack of oxygen in the 22-kilometre stretch of the river in Delhi.

Current efforts combine large-scale engineering by the DDA with community cleaning drives and strict rules to tackle the severe pollution of the Yamuna river.
