The world-famous South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim has passed away in Germany after a short illness.

Born in Cape Town as Adolph Johannes Brand, Ibrahim began composing music at age seven and started performing professionally at fifteen. During the 1950s, he became well-known in the local jazz scene. He later contributed to the 1960 album 'Jazz Epistle Verse One,' which was the first full-length jazz record produced by Black South African musicians. Because the apartheid government viewed jazz as a tool for racial integration, Ibrahim moved to Europe in the 1960s. This move allowed him to work with Duke Ellington and eventually relocate to New York in 1965.

After converting to Islam in 1968, he changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim. He recorded over 70 albums, including the 1974 piece 'Mannenberg,' which became a powerful anti-apartheid anthem and reportedly inspired Nelson Mandela while he was in prison. Ibrahim described his time abroad as a 'tactical retreat,' viewing himself and other artists as 'cultural freedom fighters.' His music blended South African vocal traditions with jazz improvisation, and he also composed music for films directed by Claire Denis.

His political importance was highlighted when he performed at Nelson Mandela's presidential inauguration in 1994. His last public appearance took place in March at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
