Cornell University has started a formal investigation after reports emerged that a student refused a professional internship because of the employer's religious identity.

The situation began on Handshake, a recruitment platform, where student Austin Franco applied for a summer job at VryfID, a New York startup. After being contacted by co-founders Gabe and Aiden Einhorn, Franco reportedly sent a message stating that he was not interested in working under Jewish leadership. Gabe Einhorn later shared this exchange on X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the ongoing problem of antisemitism.

Following the public disclosure, Franco claimed that his decision was based on a series of negative experiences with the Jewish community, both in person and online. Furthermore, he suggested that the public reaction would have been less intense if the discrimination had been directed at white or Christian people. Meanwhile, the debate grew as external figures joined in; for example, Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale argued that the student should be publicly identified to ensure he was held accountable.

Franco has since cancelled his scheduled public appearances, stating that he must wait for the university's final decision regarding his enrollment status.
