Analysis of Recent Court Decisions Regarding Political Figures and Activists in India
Introduction
Recent court cases in several Indian regions have led to different results regarding bail requests and arrest warrants for political associates and public activists.
Main Body
In Gurugram, a special court denied bail to Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims that Arora helped create about Rs 102.5 crore in illegal profits through fake GST refund claims and false mobile phone exports to the UAE. Although Arora argued that someone else managed the mobile division, the ED emphasized that bank records prove otherwise. This follows a police report from April 17 involving charges of forgery and criminal conspiracy.
At the same time, the Supreme Court of India refused to grant anticipatory bail to RTI activist Rakesh Kumar Behl and an associate. The court decided this because it observed that some types of RTI activism have become commercial businesses. The defendants were accused of blocking public workers during road construction in Punjab, and the court questioned their legal right to monitor state-funded projects.
In contrast, a district court granted bail to former Punjab minister Bikram Majithia and two associates after a conflict at a police station. The incident started during a protest against the illegal detention of Jobanpreet Singh. While police claimed that official equipment was taken and documents were destroyed, the defense pointed out that there was no CCTV evidence. Furthermore, legal advisor Bikramjit Bath was cleared of the charges after an investigation found he was only providing professional legal help.
Finally, a court in West Bengal issued an arrest warrant for Sumit Roy, an associate of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, regarding a land scam investigation. This happened because the police could not find Roy at his homes. Consequently, Roy has asked the Calcutta High Court for anticipatory bail, which is currently being reviewed.
Conclusion
The current legal situation shows a strict application of financial and criminal laws, with different levels of leniency depending on the strength of the evidence.

The Logic of 'Contrast' (Moving from A2 to B2)
At an A2 level, you usually connect ideas with but or and. To reach B2, you need to signal the relationship between two ideas before you even say them.
Look at these three patterns from the text:
1. The "Shift" Signal
"In contrast, a district court granted bail..."
Instead of saying "But another court said yes," the writer uses "In contrast." This tells the reader: 'Stop thinking about the previous failure; I am now showing you a different result.'
2. The "Unexpected" Signal
"Although Arora argued that someone else managed the mobile division, the ED emphasized..."
"Although" is a B2 power-word. It creates a balance. It acknowledges one side of the story (the argument) but immediately pushes the more important fact (the evidence) to the front.
3. The "Result" Signal
"Consequently, Roy has asked the Calcutta High Court..."
At A2, you use so. At B2, you use "Consequently." It transforms a simple sentence into a professional, logical sequence.
⚡ Quick Upgrade Chart
| A2 Word (Basic) | B2 Alternative (Professional) | Effect on the Reader |
|---|---|---|
| But | In contrast / However | Shows a formal difference |
| So | Consequently / Therefore | Shows a logical result |
| Even though | Although | Connects a contradiction smoothly |
🛠️ Application
Try replacing the 'simple' link in these thoughts using the B2 patterns above:
-
A2: The police looked for him, but they didn't find him.
-
B2: Although the police searched for him, they were unable to locate him.
-
A2: He didn't show up, so the court issued a warrant.
-
B2: He failed to appear; consequently, the court issued an arrest warrant.
