Earthquakes Recorded Across Indonesia, China, and Japan

Introduction

A series of strong earthquakes occurred on Tuesday, mainly affecting Sulawesi island in Indonesia, Qinghai province in China, and the Honshu region of Japan.

Main Body

The strongest event was a magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Palu, Central Sulawesi. The United States Geological Survey stated that the earthquake was shallow, which likely increased the strength of the shaking. Consequently, several buildings in Palu were damaged, including broken roofs, cracked walls, and a damaged main bridge. As a precaution, hospitals and hotels evacuated their guests and patients. While the National Disaster Management Agency is still collecting data on the total number of affected people, reports confirm that eight people were injured. This region is particularly sensitive to such events because of a devastating 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2018 that killed over 4,000 people.

At the same time, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit the Haixi area of Qinghai province, China. State media reported one death and four injuries. Emergency services immediately evacuated workers from nearby coal mines and sent search teams to the high-altitude Tibetan plateau. Furthermore, earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.5 and 6.0 were recorded near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. Although people in Tokyo, Gunma, and Saitama felt the tremors, meteorological agencies confirmed there were no casualties or tsunami risks.

Other instability was also noted in Southeast Asia. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred near Sumatra, and a separate high-magnitude event in the Philippines caused at least 32 deaths and triggered tsunami warnings for Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

Conclusion

Authorities in the affected areas are continuing to assess the damage and are monitoring the regions for aftershocks.

⚡ The 'Connector' Jump: Moving Beyond 'And' & 'But'

An A2 student says: "The earthquake was strong and buildings broke. The hospitals were scared so people left."

A B2 student says: "The earthquake was shallow; consequently, several buildings were damaged. As a precaution, hospitals evacuated their guests."

To reach B2, you must stop using simple lists and start showing logical relationships. Look at how this text links ideas:

🛠️ Logic Tools from the Text

WordLogical FunctionHow to use it
ConsequentlyCause \rightarrow ResultUse this instead of 'so' to sound more professional.
FurthermoreAdding InformationUse this instead of 'also' when adding a new, important point.
WhileContrast/SimultaneityUse this to balance two different facts in one sentence.
AlthoughUnexpected ResultUse this to show that something happened despite a problem.

🧩 The 'B2' Pattern: Complex Sentences

Notice the structure here:

"While the Agency is still collecting data... reports confirm that eight people were injured."

Instead of two short sentences, the author uses While to create a 'bridge'. This tells the reader: 'I am giving you the general situation (collecting data) AND a specific fact (eight injured) at the same time.'

Pro Tip: If you want to sound more fluent, start your sentence with Although or While. It forces you to build a longer, more sophisticated sentence structure, which is exactly what B2 examiners look for.
