The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and four U.S. states have started a lawsuit against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) concerning its medical guidelines for minors.

The lawsuit, which includes the states of Alaska, Iowa, Nebraska, and Texas, claims that WPATH shared misleading information about the safety and necessity of medical treatments for transgender minors. These treatments include puberty blockers, hormones, and surgeries. The FTC emphasized that WPATH did not clearly explain the potential side effects and removed age-based recommendations from its standards. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson asserted that the organization put financial profit ahead of the health and safety of children.

This legal action is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to examine gender-affirming care. Consequently, the FTC has also started investigations into the Endocrine Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Previously, in May, a federal judge temporarily stopped an FTC investigation into WPATH after the organization argued that the probe violated its First Amendment right to free speech.
