A coronial inquest is currently investigating the events that led to the death of ten-year-old Bridgette Porter in rural New South Wales in July 2020.

The court is focusing on the behavior of the killer, who is referred to as XR. Evidence shows that XR suffered from a long period of mental decline, including schizophrenia and acute psychosis, as confirmed by two psychiatric reports. This decline was evident through an obsession with violence, the possession of several knives, and the killing of six chickens. Furthermore, the inquest revealed that one day before the murder, XR tried to involve the victim in a fake serial killing game.

Testimony from those involved shows a clear disagreement regarding the level of risk. The victim's parents asserted that there were many warning signs that required immediate action. However, the killer's mother testified that she did not believe in psychiatric medicine. Because of this belief, she used a herbalist instead of professional mental health services. Although a family doctor had sent a referral to a specialist, the message was ignored in an electronic spam folder. Consequently, XR's violent thoughts turned into a lethal attack without any professional medical intervention.
