The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has seen a rapid growth of algae shortly after a multimillion-dollar renovation. As a result, officials have had to use chemical treatments to make the water clear again.

This ecological problem follows a major renovation ordered by the Trump administration, which wanted the pool to have a specific 'American flag blue' color. However, because the recent work—including draining, painting, and refilling—was done so quickly, the water quality systems may not have stabilized. Consequently, the warm early-summer water caused algae to grow rapidly.

Marine biologist Christopher Lowe asserted that while this chemical bleaches the algae, it breaks down quickly into oxygen and water. Therefore, it is only a temporary fix rather than a permanent solution. Furthermore, because the pool needs still water to create a mirror effect, it naturally encourages algae to grow.

Additionally, birds and rainwater continue to bring new algae into the water, making the problem difficult to stop completely.
