Provincial authorities in Quebec have successfully caught a red kangaroo that escaped from an illegal facility in the Montreal area.

The incident began on June 12, when a red kangaroo escaped and was seen in open fields in the suburb of Boucherville. The Galahad SPCA first shared photos of the animal on June 13. The Quebec Environment Ministry emphasized that the animal had been kept in a facility that did not meet provincial regulations. Under Quebec law, owners must have a permit to keep such species because they require specialized care and can pose risks to public safety.

Similarly, the Galahad SPCA was told that only the owner or government agents could attempt the recapture. The ministry decided to wait before capturing the animal because it was stable during the summer and they wanted to avoid accidents with traffic and the public.

The Longueuil police confirmed that the provincial government is now leading the investigation into the illegal ownership of the animal.
