Two passenger trains operated by East Midlands Railway collided south of Bedford on Friday, leaving one person dead and many others injured.

The accident happened at 17:12 BST south of the Elstow interchange. It involved two services heading to London St Pancras, one from Corby and another from Nottingham. Early reports suggest that one train hit another that was either stopped or moving slowly on the same track. Consequently, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has sent inspectors to the scene to start collecting evidence.

Emergency services responded quickly, and the East of England Ambulance Service declared the site a major incident. This meant that an air ambulance and a special hazardous area team were sent to help. Officials reported about 90 injuries, with more than 30 of them described as serious. Furthermore, Bedford Hospital prepared all its staff to handle up to 50 casualties arriving at once.

East Midlands Railway also cancelled all services to and from London St Pancras for the rest of the day. In response, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Health Secretary James Murray expressed their concern and confirmed they are working with rail partners and emergency teams to manage the situation.
