The United States government has changed its strategic approach toward Ukraine. This shift happens at the same time that Ukraine is increasing its long-range drone attacks on Russian energy facilities.

The Trump administration has shown a more positive relationship with Kyiv, which was evident during high-level meetings at the G7 summit. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth have both emphasized that the Russian invasion has been a strategic failure. This change is partly due to Ukraine's success on the battlefield and its importance in opposing the alliance between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. However, there are contradictions within the U.S. defense system. While the President publicly supports NATO, reports suggest that the U.S. plans to reduce its military presence by removing bombers and warships from Germany and Romania. Consequently, some Congressional leaders argue that these withdrawals could weaken regional stability.

At the same time, Ukraine has expanded its ability to strike deep inside Russian territory. By using advanced 'missile drones,' Ukraine has targeted the Moscow Oil Refinery and other key energy sites. These attacks have caused operational shutdowns and fuel shortages across 53 Russian regions. The Russian government has described these actions as terrorism and has threatened 'massive strikes' or even nuclear escalation if NATO becomes directly involved. Despite these threats, the Kremlin has admitted that these strikes are damaging its economy, although it is still trying to maintain diplomatic ties with the U.S. and ASEAN countries to avoid total isolation.

The conflict is currently in a delicate balance between Ukraine's increasing ability to attack Russian territory and the U.S. effort to share the cost of defense with NATO allies while still maintaining a strong deterrent.
