The New South Wales government and the CGU consortium have agreed to restart tunnelling work on the M6 motorway project after a two-year pause in construction.

The project is a $3.1 billion plan to build twin 4km tunnels between Kogarah and Arncliffe. However, it faced serious geological problems in March 2024 when two sinkholes appeared in Rockdale. These were caused by a fault in the bedrock, which forced all underground work to stop by June 2025. This technical failure led to a long disagreement between the state government and the consortium—made up of CPB Contractors, Ghella, and UGL—regarding who should pay for the repairs.

Both parties eventually reached a settlement where the CGU consortium agreed to drop its legal claims against the state. Consequently, the private company will pay for the remaining 250 metres of digging and ground stabilization. The government emphasized that it will use official dispute resolution methods to handle other legal issues while construction continues. To fix the ground, engineers will use a technique called 'jet grouting' to make the soil stronger.
