The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has released body-camera footage showing the fatal shooting of a pet dog during a wellness check in Canoga Park.

The incident began after a neighbor called 911 because they heard a woman screaming and thought there was an emergency. However, it was later discovered that the resident, Marie Marseille, was simply celebrating a basketball victory. When officers arrived, they met a two-year-old dog named Jameson. The neighbor, who had mentioned a history of domestic violence to justify the call, later said they felt sorry and described the officers' behavior as aggressive.

Footage of the event shows that the officers were worried about the dog's size. Although Ms. Marseille emphasized that the dog was not aggressive, the dog entered the hallway and barked. Consequently, an officer fired his weapon several times, killing the animal. Some reports claim that one officer was holding two guns, and one was allegedly pointed at Ms. Marseille while things were calm. On the other hand, the LAPD maintains that the dog charged at the officers, which made the use of force necessary.

Both the public and city officials have criticized the police. Mayor Karen Bass described the footage as disturbing and questioned if current police guidelines for dealing with pets are sufficient. Furthermore, community advocates asserted that the killing was unnecessary. In response, the Marseille family started a nonprofit foundation for animal welfare and asked the LAPD to admit that the force used was not needed. Additionally, critics pointed out that the LAPD released edited footage with blurred faces, which is not their usual transparency practice.
