Several European countries have started high-level emergency alerts and strict public health rules to deal with an intense heatwave occurring during the summer solstice.

To reduce the pressure on hospitals, the government banned drinking alcohol in public during the Fête de la Musique. Furthermore, 845 schools were closed, and officials increased the monitoring of water levels at nuclear power plants. The national rail company, SNCF, cancelled 71 intercity trains because the extreme heat could cause the rails to expand or power lines to fail.

Italian authorities issued 'red flag' warnings for eight cities, including Milan and Turin, while Spain issued red alerts for the Basque Country and orange warnings for 13 other regions. In the United Kingdom, the Met Office issued an amber warning, as temperatures could reach 38°C and possibly break the June record from 1976. Consequently, these conditions caused several safety incidents, such as multiple drownings in France and Germany, and the evacuation of the Berlin Open tennis tournament due to severe thunderstorms.
