Rex Heuermann, an architect from New York, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the deaths of several women on Long Island.

The investigation began in May 2010 after Shannan Gilbert disappeared. Although the Suffolk County Police Department stated that Gilbert died by accidental drowning, the search for her led to the discovery of eleven sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway. This included the 'Gilgo Four'—four young women in their twenties who worked as escorts. Other victims included a toddler, an Asian male, and several other women, some of whom had disappeared as early as 1993.

For about ten years, the case saw little progress until a special task force was created in 2022. Police identified Heuermann by combining old witness reports about a specific Chevrolet Avalanche with cellular data. Investigators discovered that 'burner' phones used to contact victims were often located near Heuermann's home in Massapequa Park and his office in Manhattan. Furthermore, forensic evidence, such as DNA found in trash, provided the biological proof needed to link him to the victims.

Court documents revealed that Heuermann used an anonymous email account to follow the investigation. After several charges, Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven counts of murder and admitted to an eighth killing. Meanwhile, a separate arrest in late 2025 linked another person to the deaths of Tanya Jackson and her daughter. Consequently, only one victim—an Asian male—remains unidentified.
