The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has issued a seven-year ban against Kenyan distance runner Kibiwott Kandie due to multiple anti-doping infractions.

The disciplinary proceedings originated from an incident on March 1, 2025, during which Mr. Kandie obstructed an out-of-competition testing protocol at his Kenyan residence. Despite receiving formal notifications regarding the repercussions of non-compliance, the athlete deferred and subsequently declined the provision of a sample, citing an urgent financial transaction. This initial refusal led to a provisional suspension on March 14, 2025.

Furthermore, the veracity of Mr. Kandie's justifications for the refusal was invalidated, with Kenyan authorities confirming the submission of fraudulent documentation. Consequently, the athlete was charged with both the refusal of a sample and the tampering—or attempted tampering—of doping control processes.

The finalized seven-year ban is backdated to the initial provisional suspension and will remain in effect until March 13, 2032. This administrative action affects an athlete of significant historical standing; Mr. Kandie is a three-time Valencia Half Marathon champion and former world-record holder, currently ranked as the third-fastest individual in the history of the half-marathon distance.
