Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) is conducting an inquiry into the unauthorized access of a child's medical data following an incident at a zoo.

The incident originated at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo, where a three-year-old male from Cambridgeshire sustained serious injuries after being placed within a crocodile enclosure. The victim was extracted by zoo personnel, including the owner's spouse, and subsequently transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Concurrently, a 30-year-old male from Norfolk was detained on suspicion of attempted murder; however, this individual was later granted bail after being deemed unfit for interview due to cognitive impairments.

Consequently, CUH has initiated a self-referral to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to determine if these incursions were predicated on legitimate clinical or operational requirements. The institution has asserted that its data protection policies are rigorous and that any verified breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary measures, potentially including termination of employment. The administration has further confirmed that the affected family is being apprised of the ongoing investigation.
