Furthermore, the conclusion of peak application periods for humanitarian resettlement schemes concerning Ukrainian and Hong Kong nationals has contributed to the downward trajectory.

Regarding asylum-related migration, the Home Office reported 93,525 claims in the year to March 2026, a 12% year-on-year decrease, while the number of asylum seekers residing in hotel accommodations fell to 20,885 by March 2026.

Research conducted by the think tank British Future reveals a substantial perception gap, with 49% of respondents incorrectly believing net migration had increased. This discrepancy is further evidenced by the public overestimating the proportion of asylum seekers within the total migration cohort at 33%, whereas the actual figure is approximately 9%. From an economic perspective, analysts from the University of Oxford suggest that the current composition of migration may be less favorable, as reductions have occurred primarily among high-economic-impact groups, such as skilled workers, while asylum-related migration remains proportionally high.
