A selection of late 19th-century French wines, recovered from a subterranean cache in the Czech Republic, has undergone professional restoration by the producing estate.

The provenance of the collection is linked to the Beaufort-Spontin family, who concealed the assets beneath the floorboards of the Becov nad Teplou castle chapel upon their departure for Austria at the conclusion of World War II, following allegations of Nazi collaboration. The cache, which included the Reliquary of St. Maurus, remained undisturbed until 1985. This discovery was precipitated by the efforts of an American national, Danny Douglas, who had been commissioned by the family to retrieve the items; however, administrative friction during the permit process alerted state authorities to the existence of the hoard.

Technical intervention commenced approximately one decade ago, with Château d'Yquem overseeing the stabilization of eight bottles from the 1892 and 1896 vintages. Cellar Master Toni El Khawand noted that the subterranean environment—characterized by high humidity, low temperatures, and thermal stability—facilitated the preservation of the liquid. Verification was achieved through laboratory analysis and the use of a Coravin system to extract samples without compromising the original seals. Due to oxidative exposure during the process, the volume was reduced to five full original bottles. The restoration included the replacement of corks and the application of capsules, while the original exterior dust was intentionally preserved to maintain authenticity.

Notwithstanding this figure, the winery has emphasized the historical and moral significance of the collection over its fiscal utility. Consequently, the administration of Becov castle has eschewed commercial liquidation in favor of a public exhibition. This initiative is currently contingent upon the success of a fundraising campaign, which would further enable comprehensive chemical analysis and the potential reconditioning of additional bottles, including 19th-century port and sherry.
