This anomalous spin likely precluded the alignment of solar arrays with the sun, resulting in a critical depletion of battery reserves. The scientific yield was substantial; the mission provided empirical evidence of 'sputtering'—a process of atmospheric escape where charged particles displace neutral atmosphere. This research, combined with observations of solar storm impacts and planetary aurorae, has advanced the understanding of the Martian climate's transition from a historically warmer, wetter state to its current tenuous atmosphere.

Although four remaining orbiters maintain sufficient capacity for the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers, the agency has noted a marginal increase in data retrieval latency. Consequently, NASA has issued a request for proposals for a commercial Mars Telecommunications Network, intended for operational deployment by the 2030s to ensure a more robust and high-throughput communication architecture.
