🛠️ Building Age Descriptions

In this story, we see a very common way to describe people's ages. It is a simple pattern: Number + year-old + person.

How it works:

  • 16 → 16-year-old girl
  • 15 → 15-year-old boy
  • 19 → 19-year-old man
  • 67 → 67-year-old woman

⚠️ The Golden Rule: When we use the age as a 'label' before the person, we use -year-old (singular). We do NOT say "16-years-old girl."

⚡ Quick Action Words (Past Tense)

Notice how the story tells us what happened using simple past actions. Most of these just need a -ed at the end:

  • Arrest \rightarrow arrested
  • Chase \rightarrow chased
  • Park \rightarrow parked

The 'Rule Breakers' (Irregular): Some words change completely. You just have to memorize them:

  • Die \rightarrow died (regular)
  • Hit \rightarrow hit (stays the same!)
  • Find \rightarrow found

Example flow: Police chased the car \rightarrow The car hit a pole \rightarrow Police found a gun.

Report on Three Separate Violent Incidents Leading to Murder and Attempted Murder Charges

關於三起導致謀殺及企圖謀殺指控的暴力事件報告

Introduction

This report describes three different criminal events involving deadly force in various locations. In each case, the suspects have been arrested and charged with serious crimes.

本報告描述了在不同地點發生的三起涉及致命武力的刑事事件。在每宗案件中,嫌疑人均已被逮捕,並被指控犯下嚴重罪行。

Main Body

The first incident took place in Kent, Washington, on June 3, during a gathering of teenagers. A 16-year-old girl died from gunshot wounds. On June 18, police arrested a 15-year-old boy in Seattle and found a handgun that had been modified to fire automatically. Consequently, the King County Prosecutor's Office charged him with first-degree murder, assault, and illegal firearm possession. Because of the suspect's age, a judge must now decide if the case will be handled in juvenile or adult court.

第一起事件發生於 6 月 3 日的華盛頓州肯特,當時正值一群青少年的聚集活動。一名 16 歲少女死於槍傷。6 月 18 日,警方在西雅圖逮捕了一名 15 歲少年,並發現一把經過改裝可自動射擊的手槍。因此,金郡檢察官辦公室指控其犯一級謀殺、襲擊及非法持有槍械。由於嫌疑人的年齡,法官目前必須決定此案將在青少年法庭或成人法庭審理。

In a separate event on June 23, a car accident occurred on the North West Coastal Highway in Western Australia. A 19-year-old man driving a Suzuki Swift crashed into a motorhome, which then caught fire. This accident killed a 29-year-old woman and injured two other people. After the homicide squad investigated the driver's behavior before the crash, the 19-year-old was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

在另一起 6 月 23 日的事件中,西澳的西北海岸公路發生了一起車禍。一名 19 歲男子駕駛 Suzuki Swift 撞上一輛露營車,隨後起火。這次事故導致一名 29 歲女性死亡,另有兩人受傷。在兇案小組調查該駕駛員撞車前的行為後,該名 19 歲青年被指控一項謀殺罪及兩項企圖謀殺罪。

Finally, on June 24, a 67-year-old woman was seriously shot in the chest at her home in Canandaigua. After witnesses described the suspect, a sheriff's deputy chased the suspect's car in Geneva. The chase ended when the car hit a utility pole and a parked vehicle. The suspect, 50-year-old Spencer D. Wayne, was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault after police found a loaded gun in the car.

最後,6 月 24 日,一名 67 歲女性在其位於 Canandaigua 的家中胸部受嚴重槍傷。在目擊者描述嫌疑人後,一名警長副手在 Geneva 追緝嫌疑人的車輛。追逐在車輛撞上電線桿及一部停泊車輛後結束。嫌疑人為 50 歲的 Spencer D. Wayne,警方在車內發現一支上膛的槍,他隨後被逮捕並被指控二級企圖謀殺及一級襲擊。

Conclusion

All three cases are currently moving through the legal system, and the suspects face severe charges ranging from attempted murder to first-degree murder.

這三起案件目前均在法律程序中,嫌疑人面臨的指控非常嚴重,範圍從企圖謀殺到一級謀殺不等。

⚡ The Logic of 'Cause and Effect' (A2 \rightarrow B2)

To move from A2 to B2, you must stop using only 'because' and 'so'. B2 speakers use Logical Connectors to show how one event leads to another. This article provides a perfect map of this transition.

🛠️ The Upgrade Path

A2 Level (Simple)B2 Level (Professional)Example from Text
So...Consequently,"...modified to fire automatically. Consequently, the Office charged him..."
Because...Due to / Because of"Because of the suspect's age, a judge must now decide..."
Then...Following / After"After witnesses described the suspect..."

🔍 Why this matters

In the article, the author doesn't just list facts; they link them.

Look at the flow: Event A (Gun found) \rightarrow Connector (Consequently) \rightarrow Event B (Legal charges)

If you say: "He had a gun, so he was arrested," you sound like a beginner. If you say: "He was found with a weapon; consequently, he was arrested," you are speaking at a B2 level.

💡 Quick Pro-Tip: The "Comma Rule"

Notice that Consequently is followed by a comma (,). When you start a sentence with a heavy logical connector to show a result, always pause with a comma before finishing your thought. This gives your speech a sophisticated, academic rhythm.

Vocabulary Learning

consequently (adv.)
As a result of something that has happened.
Example:The driver was speeding; consequently, he lost control of the vehicle.
modified (adj.)

juvenile (adj.)
Relating to young people who are legally not yet adults.
Example:The teenager was sent to a juvenile detention center for his crimes.

The Architecture of Clinical Detachment: Nominalization and the 'Passive-Formal' Nexus

To transition from B2 (competent communication) to C2 (mastery), a student must move beyond describing events and begin encoding them. This text is a masterclass in Clinical Detachment, a linguistic strategy used in high-stakes legal and forensic reporting to remove emotional subjectivity and emphasize procedural fact.

✦ The Pivot: From Verbs to Nouns (Nominalization)

B2 learners typically rely on active verbs: "The car crashed and started a fire." C2 mastery employs Nominalization, turning actions into conceptual entities to increase density and formality.

  • Textual Evidence: "...a vehicular collision transpired... causing the latter to ignite."
  • Analysis: The author doesn't say "cars collided"; they use "vehicular collision" as a noun phrase. This shifts the focus from the actors to the event itself. This is the hallmark of academic and legal precision.

✦ The 'Static' Lexis

Observe the selection of verbs. The text avoids "common" movement verbs in favor of stative or formal equivalents that imply a record-keeping perspective:

B2/C1 EquivalentC2 Forensic AlternativeLinguistic Effect
HappenedTranspiredSuggests a documented sequence of events.
DiedSuccumbed toShifts the focus to the cause/process of death.
CaughtApprehendedImplies legal authority and official procedure.
Got/HadSustainedSpecifically used for injuries to denote a physical impact.

✦ Syntactic Compression via Participles

C2 writing avoids repetitive sentence structures ("He did X. Then he did Y."). Instead, it uses participial phrases to weave multiple facts into a single, sophisticated thread.

"The suspect... was apprehended and charged... after a loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle."

By appending the recovery of the weapon as a subordinate clause, the writer establishes a causal link between the evidence and the charge without needing a new sentence, maintaining a relentless, rhythmic professional pace.

The C2 Takeaway: To achieve this level, stop searching for "better words" and start searching for "better structures." Replace your verbs with nouns, and your simple narratives with clinical observations.
