💡 THE 'NOW' vs 'THEN' SHIFT
In this story, we see two ways to talk about time. Look at how the words change:
The Past (Finished)
- went → He went to the hospital.
- arrested → Police arrested a man.
- broke → They broke the rules.
The Present (Happening now)
- is → The boy is doing better.
- is checking → The hospital is still checking.
🛠️ WORD BUILDER: AGES
To describe people, we use a simple pattern:
Number + year-old + Person
- 3 three-year-old boy
- 30 30-year-old man
Tip: We use the little dashes (-) to turn the age into one big describing word!

Investigation into Unauthorized Access of Child's Medical Records After Zoo Accident
動物園意外後調查兒童醫療記錄被擅自查閱事件
Introduction
Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) is investigating why a child's medical records were accessed without permission following an accident at a zoo.
劍橋大學醫院 (CUH) 正在調查一名兒童在動物園發生意外後,其醫療記錄為何在未經許可的情況下被查閱。
Main Body
The incident happened at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo, where a three-year-old boy from Cambridgeshire was seriously injured after falling into a crocodile enclosure. Zoo staff, including the owner's wife, rescued the child and took him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. At the same time, police arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder. However, he was later released on bail because he was considered unfit for questioning due to mental health issues.
此事件發生在 Johnsons of Old Hurst 動物園,一名來自劍橋郡的三歲男孩在掉入鱷魚池後受重傷。動物園員工(包括老闆妻子)救起該名男孩並將其送往 Addenbrooke’s 醫院。與此同時,警方逮捕了一名來自諾福克郡的 30 歲男子,涉嫌企圖謀殺。然而,他隨後獲保釋,因為其精神健康問題被認為不適合接受問詢。
Regarding the privacy breach, about 40 staff members looked at the patient's medical records, even though strict access rules were in place. Consequently, CUH has reported itself to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to check if these employees had a professional reason to see the data. The hospital emphasized that its data protection rules are very strict and warned that any staff member found guilty of a breach could face disciplinary action, including losing their job. Furthermore, the hospital confirmed that the family is being kept informed about the investigation.
關於隱私洩漏部分,儘管有嚴格的查閱規定,仍約有 40 名員工查閱了該病患的醫療記錄。因此,CUH 已向資訊專員公署 (ICO) 舉報,以核實這些員工是否有專業理由查閱數據。醫院強調其數據保護規定非常嚴格,並警告任何被發現違規的員工可能面臨紀律處分,包括被解雇。此外,醫院確認已持續向家屬告知調查進展。
Conclusion
The child is currently in stable condition, and the hospital's investigation into the privacy violations is still ongoing.
該名兒童目前情況穩定,醫院對隱私違規的調查仍在進行中。

The 'B2 Bridge': Moving from Simple to Formal Cause & Effect
At an A2 level, you probably use "because" or "so" for everything. While correct, a B2 speaker uses "Connecting Adverbs" to make their speech and writing sound professional and structured.
⚡ The Upgrade
Look at how the article links ideas. Instead of saying "The staff broke rules, so the hospital told the ICO," it uses a high-level bridge word:
*"...strict access rules were in place. Consequently, CUH has reported itself..."
Consequently is the B2 version of "so." It signals a direct, logical result of a previous action. It is a 'power word' for formal reports and essays.
🛠️ Practical Application
To move toward B2, stop starting every sentence with Because. Try these replacements based on the text's logic:
| A2 Logic (Basic) | B2 Logic (Advanced) | Context from Article |
|---|---|---|
| So... | Consequently, | The rules were broken The ICO was notified. |
| And also... | Furthermore, | The hospital is investigating The family is being informed. |
| But... | However, | A man was arrested He was released on bail. |
💡 Pro Tip: The Comma Trick
Notice that Consequently, Furthermore, and However are almost always followed by a comma when they start a sentence. This is a key marker of B2 academic writing. If you use these words without the comma, you aren't quite at B2 yet!

Investigation into Unauthorized Access of Pediatric Medical Records Following Zoo Incident
動物園意外後兒童醫療紀錄被非法查閱之調查
Introduction
Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) is conducting an inquiry into the unauthorized access of a child's medical data following an incident at a zoo.
劍橋大學醫院 (CUH) 針對一次動物園意外後,一名兒童的醫療數據被非法查閱一事展開調查。
Main Body
The incident originated at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo, where a three-year-old male from Cambridgeshire sustained serious injuries after being placed within a crocodile enclosure. The victim was extracted by zoo personnel, including the owner's spouse, and subsequently transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Concurrently, a 30-year-old male from Norfolk was detained on suspicion of attempted murder; however, this individual was later granted bail after being deemed unfit for interview due to cognitive impairments.
該事件發生於 Johnsons of Old Hurst 動物園,一名來自劍橋郡的三歲男童在被放入鱷魚池後受重傷。受害者由動物園職員(包括老闆配偶)救出,隨後被送往 Addenbrooke’s 醫院。與此同時,一名來自諾福克郡的 30 歲男子因涉嫌謀殺被拘留;然而,該名男子隨後被判定因認知障礙而不適合接受問詢,因此獲准保釋。
Regarding the administrative breach, approximately 40 staff members accessed the patient's records despite the implementation of restrictive access protocols. Consequently, CUH has initiated a self-referral to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to determine if these incursions were predicated on legitimate clinical or operational requirements. The institution has asserted that its data protection policies are rigorous and that any verified breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary measures, potentially including termination of employment. The administration has further confirmed that the affected family is being apprised of the ongoing investigation.
關於行政違規部分,儘管已實施限制查閱協定,仍約有 40 名員工查閱了該患者的紀錄。因此,CUH 已主動向資訊專員公署 (ICO) 舉報,以判定這些查閱行為是否基於合法的臨床或營運需求。該機構聲明其數據保護政策十分嚴格,任何被證實違反保密協議的行為都將面臨紀律處分,其中可能包括解僱。院方進一步確認,受影響的家屬正被告知調查進展。
Conclusion
The patient remains in stable condition, and the institutional investigation into data privacy violations continues.
患者目前情況穩定,院方針對數據隱私違規的調查仍在進行中。

The Architecture of Institutional Detachment
To migrate from B2 (functional fluency) to C2 (mastery), a student must move beyond meaning and into register and affect. This text is a masterclass in Nominalization and Passive Distancing, a linguistic strategy used in high-stakes administrative and legal discourse to obfuscate agency and sanitize trauma.
◈ The 'De-Agentive' Shift
Observe the phrase: "...any verified breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary measures."
At a B2 level, a writer might say: "If we find that someone broke the rules, we will punish them."
The C2 Distinction:
- Nominalization: "Breach of confidentiality" turns an action (breaking a rule) into a conceptual object (a breach). This removes the 'actor' from the sentence, shifting the focus to the occurrence rather than the person.
- Abstract Causality: The verb "result in" replaces an active threat. The discipline is not being 'administered' by a person; it is a logical consequence of the 'breach'.
◈ Lexical Precision vs. Common Usage
C2 mastery requires the ability to select terms that carry specific legal or clinical weight. Contrast these pairs from the text:
| B2 Approximation | C2 Institutional Precision | Linguistic Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| Looked at | Accessed | Implies a technical interaction with a secure system. |
| Based on | Predicated on | Suggests a formal logical foundation or prerequisite. |
| Told | Apprised of | Shifts the tone from casual communication to formal notification. |
| Intrusions | Incursions | Adds a layer of illicit 'entry' often associated with borders or secure zones. |
◈ Syntactic Complexity: The 'Concurrent' Clause
"Concurrently, a 30-year-old male from Norfolk was detained..."
Notice the use of Concurrently as a sentence-level adverb. While a B2 student uses "At the same time," a C2 user employs a Latinate adverb to create a structural bridge between two disparate plot points (the child's injury and the man's arrest) without needing a coordinating conjunction. This creates a 'staccato' effect of factual reporting, mimicking the style of an official police or hospital briefing.
