🚨 Action Words: Past vs. Present

In this story, we see how English changes when something already happened versus what is happening now.

1. The 'Finished' Actions (Past) Most of the story uses words that end in -ed. This tells us the action is over.

  • helped → (they did it)
  • tipped → (it happened)
  • used → (they finished using them)

2. The 'Still Happening' Actions (Present) When the story talks about the search right now, the words change to are + -ing.

  • are looking → (they are doing it now)
  • continues → (it is still going)

Quick Guide for A2: Past \rightarrow’s usually -ed (e.g., saved) Now \rightarrow’s usually are + ing (e.g., are searching)

Report on Maritime Rescue Operations in the Pacific and North American Coasts

太平洋及北美海岸海上救援行動報告

Introduction

Emergency services carried out two separate rescue operations involving several people in the waters near Oahu, Hawaii, and the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.

緊急服務部門在夏威夷歐胡島與卑詩省喬治亞海峽附近水域,進行了兩次涉及多人的獨立救援行動。

Main Body

In the first case, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department (HOSD) worked together to rescue twenty people after three outrigger canoes overturned about one mile from Hanauma Bay. The operation began at 09:17 and included six HFD units, a rescue boat, and a helicopter. Additionally, the HOSD used two rescue Jet Skis to help. Reports stated that two boats were badly damaged, while one was still usable. This accident happened despite a weather warning that advised inexperienced sailors not to use small boats due to dangerous conditions. At the same time, HOSD staff handled several other ocean emergencies at Nanakuli, Makaha, Haleiwa, and Sunset Beach.

In a separate incident, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Canadian Coast Guard performed a search and rescue operation about ten miles southwest of Vancouver International Airport. After a civilian boat reported that some people were in the water without life jackets, several agencies were called to help. This included a Cormorant helicopter, a Kingfisher aircraft, a hovercraft, and assets from the Ganges Lifeboat Station. Furthermore, commercial ferry operators and the Marine Search and Rescue Auxiliary provided extra support. By 15:15, four people were taken to medical services; however, the CAF emphasized that the search for six other missing people is still active.

Conclusion

While the operation in Oahu ended with all twenty people being saved, the operation in British Columbia is still ongoing as rescuers continue to look for six missing persons.

雖然歐胡島的行動以二十人全部獲救告終,但卑詩省的行動仍在進行中,救援人員繼續搜尋六名失蹤者。

The 'Connector' Leap: Moving Beyond 'And' & 'But'

At the A2 level, you likely use and, but, and because for everything. To reach B2, you need to use Transition Markers. These are words that tell the reader how two ideas relate, making your English sound professional and fluid.

⚡ The 'Adding' Upgrade

Instead of repeating and or also, look at how the report expands information:

  • Additionally... (Used when adding a new, similar piece of information)
  • Furthermore... (Used to add a more important or stronger point)

Example from text: "Additionally, the HOSD used two rescue Jet Skis..." \rightarrow This signals to the reader: "I have told you about the boats and helicopters; now here is one more detail."

⚡ The 'Contrast' Shift

A2 students use but. B2 students use However or Despite.

1. The 'However' Pivot Used to show a conflict between two complete sentences.

  • A2 Style: They saved four people, but they are still looking for six.
  • B2 Style: Four people were taken to medical services; however, the search for six other missing people is still active.

2. The 'Despite' Barrier This is a high-level move. Despite is followed by a noun (a thing), not a full sentence. It shows that something happened even though there was a reason for it not to happen.

  • Structure: Despite + [Noun/Fact], [Main Action].
  • Text Analysis: "This accident happened despite a weather warning..."

🚀 Practical Application for You

To bridge the gap, stop starting sentences with But. Try this logic flow instead:

A2 LogicB2 TransitionEffect
I like the city, but it is noisy.I enjoy the city; however, the noise is overwhelming.More formal/precise.
I studied hard and I passed.I studied hard. Furthermore, I attended every class.Adds weight to the claim.
It rained but we went out.Despite the rain, we went out.Sounds like a native speaker.

Example:Strong winds caused the small boat to overturn in the middle of the lake.
inexperienced (adj.)
Lacking the knowledge or skill gained from practice
Example:The guide warned that inexperienced hikers might get lost in the dense forest.
civilian (adj.)
Relating to ordinary citizens, not belonging to the military or police force
Example:The military aircraft provided assistance to a civilian vessel in distress.
emphasize (v.)
To give special importance or prominence to something in speaking or writing

Analysis of Maritime Rescue Operations in the Pacific and North American Coastal Regions.

太平洋與北美海岸地區海上救援行動分析

Introduction

Emergency services conducted two distinct maritime recovery operations involving multiple casualties in the waters off Oahu, Hawaii, and the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.

緊急服務部門在夏威夷歐胡島與卑詩省喬治亞海峽的海域,進行了兩次涉及多名傷亡的獨立海上搜救行動。

Main Body

In the first instance, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department (HOSD) coordinated the extraction of twenty individuals following the capsizing of three six-man outrigger canoes approximately one nautical mile from Hanauma Bay. The operational response commenced at 09:17 hours, involving six HFD units, a rescue vessel, and aerial support via Air 1. The HOSD deployed two rescue Jet Skis to facilitate the recovery. Institutional reports indicate that two vessels sustained critical structural failure, while one remained seaworthy. This event occurred notwithstanding a National Weather Service small craft advisory, which cautioned against the navigation of smaller vessels by inexperienced mariners due to hazardous conditions. Concurrently, HOSD personnel managed several disparate ocean-related emergencies at Nanakuli, Makaha, Haleiwa, and Sunset Beach.

Separately, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Canadian Coast Guard executed a search and rescue operation approximately ten nautical miles southwest of Vancouver International Airport. Upon notification by a civilian vessel regarding individuals lacking personal flotation devices, a multi-agency mobilization was initiated. This included the deployment of a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter, a CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft, the Hovercraft Siyay, and assets from the Main Lifeboat Station Ganges. Furthermore, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Auxiliary and commercial ferry operators diverted resources to assist. As of 15:15 hours, four individuals were transferred to emergency health services via the Sea Island Coast Guard Station; however, the CAF maintains that the search for six additional missing persons remains active.

Conclusion

While the Oahu operation concluded with the safe recovery of all twenty participants, the British Columbia operation remains incomplete as search efforts continue for six missing persons.

雖然歐胡島的行動以成功救出所有 20 名參與者告終,但卑詩省的行動尚未完成,因為對 6 名失蹤者的搜救工作仍在繼續。

The Architecture of Nominalization and Bureaucratic Precision

To transition from B2 to C2, a student must move beyond describing actions and begin constructing states of being through Nominalization. This text is a masterclass in transforming verbs into nouns to achieve an objective, 'institutional' distance—a hallmark of C2 academic and professional registers.

⚡ The Pivot: From Action to Entity

Observe how the text avoids simple subject-verb-object patterns. Instead of saying "The departments coordinated to extract people," the author writes:

*"...coordinated the extraction of twenty individuals..."

By turning the action (extract) into a noun (extraction), the focus shifts from the people doing the work to the process itself. This creates an air of authority and clinical precision.

🔍 Advanced Linguistic Deconstruction

B2 Approximation (Narrative)C2 Execution (Institutional)Linguistic Mechanism
They started the response at 09:17."The operational response commenced at 09:17 hours."Nominalized subject + Formal verb choice
A weather warning said not to go out."...notwithstanding a National Weather Service small craft advisory..."Prepositional concession + Specialized noun
They started moving agencies."...a multi-agency mobilization was initiated."Passive voice + Nominalization of mobilize

🛠 Syntactic Sophistication: The 'Notwithstanding' Bridge

The use of "notwithstanding" is a critical C2 marker. While a B2 student uses "despite" or "although," the C2 writer utilizes notwithstanding as a formal preposition to introduce a contrasting fact without breaking the rhythmic flow of a complex sentence.

Formula for Mastery: [Event] occurred + notwithstanding + [Official Warning/Condition].

💎 The 'Precision' Lexicon

Notice the avoidance of generic verbs. There is no "gave" or "sent." Instead, we see:

  • Facilitate: To make a process easier (used here for the Jet Skis).
  • Divert: To strategically redirect resources.
  • Sustain: To undergo or suffer (structural failure).

C2 Takeaway: To achieve mastery, stop focusing on who did what. Focus on the deployment of assets, the initiation of mobilizations, and the execution of operations. This is the shift from storytelling to professional reporting.
