Instead of just saying "a man," the text uses a Number-Age-Noun pattern. This is a great way to be more specific in English:

Example: A 10-year-old girl / A 30-year-old doctor.

At the A2 level, students usually use 'so' or 'because' to connect ideas. To reach B2, you need to use Connecting Adverbs. These words make your writing sound professional and academic, like a news report.

🔍 The Shift in the Text

Look at how the article avoids saying "so" repeatedly. Instead, it uses these sophisticated bridges:

1. "As a result of..." $\rightarrow$ Used to show the direct consequence of an action.

   • A2 style: The police found a body, so they arrested a man.
   • B2 style: As a result of this operation, one person was arrested.

2. "Consequently" $\rightarrow$ A formal way to say 'therefore' or 'because of this'.

   • A2 style: He was hurt, so the police arrested a 22-year-old.
   • B2 style: Consequently, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

When you move toward B2, stop starting every sentence with the subject. Start with the result using these markers:

Pro Tip: Notice that Consequently is usually followed by a comma (,) when it starts a sentence. This is a key punctuation mark for B2 learners to master.

While a B2 learner describes events using active and emotive language (e.g., "Police caught a man after someone died"), the C2 practitioner employs a 'clinical' distance that strips subjectivity from the narrative to project authority and objectivity.

• The 'Arrest' $\rightarrow$ 'Custodial Detention': "Arrested" is a common verb. "Remains in custodial detention" is a state of being. C2 English favors the noun phrase over the simple verb to create a sense of permanence and legality.
• The 'Action' $\rightarrow$ 'Operational Response': By labeling police work as an "operational response," the text removes the human element and replaces it with a systemic framework.

🧩 Linguistic Strategy: The 'Prepositional Heavy' Construction

C2 proficiency is marked by the ability to stack precise prepositional phrases to narrow a scope without using clumsy adjectives.

Analysis:

• Augmented: (C2 Lexis) Not just 'increased,' but systematically added to.
• Presence: (Abstract Noun) Not 'more police,' but the state of being present.
• Within the vicinity: (Precise Locative) A formal alternative to 'nearby.'
