Vocabulary Learning

⚾️ Who is doing what?

In this text, we see a simple pattern for talking about habits or schedules:

[Team/Person] \rightarrow [Action]

  • The Giants \rightarrow play
  • The Nationals \rightarrow play

Quick Tip: When talking about a team (a group), we use the simple form of the verb.

⏳ Now vs. Before

Look at how the words change when we talk about the past:

  1. Now: They play (happening this week).
  2. Before: They played (happened in the last game).

Just add -ed to the end of the action word to move it to the past!

🚫 Saying 'No'

To say something did not happen, use did not + the basic action word:

  • The Braves \rightarrow did not name \rightarrow their pitcher.

(Notice we don't say "did not named". The -ed disappears when did not arrives!)

🚀 The 'B2 Pivot': Moving Beyond Basic Descriptions

At the A2 level, you describe things using simple sentences: "The Giants are playing. The pitcher is Tyler Mahle." To reach B2, you need to connect ideas to show how they relate to each other.

🔍 The Power of 'The Bridge' (Connectors)

Look at how the article avoids boring, short sentences. It uses specific words to pivot from one idea to another. These are your 'B2 Bridges':

  • "Meanwhile..." \rightarrow Use this when two things are happening at the same time in different places.
    • A2: I am studying. My brother is sleeping.
    • B2: I am studying; meanwhile, my brother is sleeping.
  • "Furthermore..." \rightarrow Use this to add a more important or additional point to your argument.
    • A2: The hotel is cheap. It is near the beach.
    • B2: The hotel is cheap; furthermore, it is located right next to the beach.
  • "However..." \rightarrow Use this to show a contrast or a 'surprise' in the information.
    • A2: I like the car. It is too expensive.
    • B2: I really like the car; however, it is far too expensive for my budget.

🛠️ Advanced Phrasing: "Be set to" vs "Will"

Notice the phrase: "The San Francisco Giants... are set to begin."

Instead of always using "will" (A2), B2 speakers use "be set to [verb]" when something is planned, scheduled, or expected to happen. It sounds more professional and certain.

Try this mental shift:

  • The meeting will start at 9:00. (Simple)
  • The meeting is set to start at 9:00. (B2 Fluency)

💡 Quick Logic Map

Adding Info \rightarrow Furthermore Same Time/Different Place \rightarrow Meanwhile Opposite Result \rightarrow However Planned Action \rightarrow Be set to

The Art of 'Hyper-Formalization' and Lexical Displacement

To transition from B2 to C2, a student must move beyond accuracy and toward stylistic intentionality. This text is a fascinating specimen because it employs Hyper-Formalization: the deliberate replacement of natural, high-frequency sporting terminology with sterile, administrative, or academic synonyms. This is not 'natural' English; it is 'performative' English, often used in legal, bureaucratic, or highly technical contexts to strip emotion and add an air of objective authority.

⚡ The Displacement Mechanism

Observe how the author systematically avoids the 'language of the game' in favor of 'language of the office':

Natural Sport English (B2/C1)Hyper-Formalized Displacement (C2)Linguistic Shift
Games / MatchesInter-City EngagementsEvent \rightarrow Formal Appointment
Start / BeginCommence / InitiateAction \rightarrow Formal Process
Lineup changesPersonnel modificationsPeople \rightarrow Human Resources
Playing / PitchingPitching engagementSkill \rightarrow Contractual Obligation
Lineup / RosterInstallationStrategy \rightarrow Technical Setup

🔍 Critical C2 Insight: The 'Sterilization' Effect

At the C2 level, you must recognize that precision is not always about the most accurate word, but the most appropriate register.

By using "slated to initiate" instead of "set to start," the writer creates a psychological distance. This is known as Nominalization and Latinate substitution. Instead of focusing on the action (the game), the text focuses on the status (the schedule).

The C2 Takeaway: When you want to sound detached, authoritative, or clinical (e.g., in a white paper or a formal legal grievance), avoid phrasal verbs and common idioms. Instead, migrate toward Latin-root verbs (commence, implement, designate) and treat human actions as administrative functions (installation, modifications).
