The company and workers talked for many months. Now, 3,500 workers have a deal. They will get more money for three years. The government must say yes to this deal first.

Queensland Rail has reached preliminary agreements with three out of six unions, although train services in south-east Queensland are still limited.

The current service restrictions were caused by long negotiations that began in January to update six employment contracts affecting about 5,600 staff. After six weeks of intense mediation led by the Fair Work Commission, an initial agreement was reached for staff in Station Operations, Travel and Tourism, and Administrative, Professional and Technical roles. This deal covers roughly 3,500 employees and includes an 8 per cent pay rise over three years, a cost-of-living increase of up to 2.5 per cent, and a special allowance to encourage the completion of major projects. However, these terms must still be approved by the Queensland Rail board and the state government.

Despite this progress, significant disruptions continue. The rail network is operating at about 80 per cent capacity, meaning roughly 300 weekday services have been cut. This is due to a combination of ongoing strikes and a large amount of overdue maintenance that has built up since April. While the Rail, Tram and Bus Union recently cancelled some planned strikes to show good faith during a major sporting event, negotiations are still unfinished for the Network, Train Control, and Rollingstock agreements. Management emphasized that the current deals will not immediately bring back the full timetable because of the existing technical maintenance issues.

Following a six-week period of intensive mediation facilitated by the Fair Work Commission, a preliminary accord was reached concerning the Station Operations, Travel and Tourism, and Administrative, Professional and Technical agreements. This rapprochement covers approximately 3,500 employees and stipulates an 8 per cent wage increase over a triennium, a cost-of-living adjustment of up to 2.5 per cent, and a strategic delivery allowance designed to incentivize major project completion. These terms remain contingent upon the satisfaction of specific conditions and subsequent approval by the Queensland Rail board and the state government.

Despite these developments, systemic disruptions persist. The network continues to operate at approximately 80 per cent capacity, with a reduction of roughly 300 weekday services. This operational deficit is attributed to a combination of ongoing protected industrial action and a substantial maintenance backlog accumulated since April. While the Rail, Tram and Bus Union recently rescinded planned actions coinciding with a high-profile sporting event to demonstrate good faith, negotiations remain unresolved for the Network, Train Control, and Rollingstock and Operations agreements, as well as a proposed standalone electrical agreement. The administration has indicated that the current in-principle agreements will not yield an immediate restoration of the full timetable due to the aforementioned technical arrears.
