📍 Where is it happening?

Look at how we talk about places. We use "In + Place". This is a simple rule for A2 learners to describe where an event occurs.

  • In London
  • In Australia
  • In India
  • In Israel
  • In the USA

Quick Tip: Use "In" for cities, countries, and large areas.

🔢 Describing People (Age)

In English, we can describe someone's age in two different ways. See the patterns from the text:

  1. The Age Group \rightarrow "A man in his 20s" (This means he is between 20 and 29 years old).

  2. The Specific Age \rightarrow "A 44-year-old man" (Notice there are dashes - between the words. This turns the age into one big adjective to describe the man).

🔍 Action Words (Past)

Most of the actions here happened in the past. We add -ed to the end of the word to show it is finished:

  • Arrest \rightarrow Arrested
  • Jump \rightarrow Jumped

Wait! Some words are "rule-breakers" (Irregular). You must memorize these:

  • Die \rightarrow Died (regular)
  • Go \rightarrow Went (irregular)
  • Know \rightarrow Knew (irregular)

💡 The "Logic Glue" (Connectors)

At an A2 level, you likely use and, but, and because. To move toward B2, you need Connectors. These are words that act like glue, showing how one idea leads to another. Without them, your writing sounds like a list; with them, it sounds like a story.

🛠️ The Upgrade Path

Look at how the article replaces simple A2 words with B2 logic:

  • Instead of "So..." \rightarrow Consequently / As a result

    • A2: He jumped from a window, so he was hospitalized.
    • B2: He jumped from a window; consequently, he was hospitalized.
    • Rule: Use these when one event causes the next. They are formal and strong.
  • Instead of "But..." \rightarrow However / Although

    • A2: He is a soldier, but he was arrested.
    • B2: Although he is a soldier with no criminal record, he was detained.
    • Rule: Although introduces a surprise or a contrast at the start of a thought.
  • Instead of "Also..." \rightarrow Meanwhile

    • A2: A man died in Newcastle. Also, a man was arrested in Victoria.
    • B2: A man died in Newcastle... Meanwhile, in Victoria, police arrested a 43-year-old man.
    • Rule: Use Meanwhile when two different things are happening at the same time in different places.

🧠 Pro Tip for Fluency

To sound more like a B2 speaker, stop starting every sentence with the Subject (The police..., The man...). Start with the Logic Glue:

"However, the police emphasized that there is no threat."

By moving the connector to the front, you signal to the listener exactly how to understand the information before you even give it to them.

Example:Forensic evidence, such as DNA and fingerprints, helped the police identify the suspect.

To keep someone in official custody, typically for questioning.

The Architecture of Clinical Detachment

To transition from B2 to C2, a student must move beyond accuracy and master register. This text is a masterclass in Euphemistic Formalism—the linguistic art of using clinical, Latinate vocabulary to distance the reader from the visceral horror of the events described.

1. The 'Nominalization' Strategy

C2 proficiency is characterized by the ability to shift action from verbs (dynamic) to nouns (static). This creates an aura of objective authority.

  • B2 Level: "A man died from stab wounds." \rightarrow C2 Level: "A male... succumbed to stab wounds."
  • B2 Level: "Police are looking for witnesses." \rightarrow C2 Level: "...continue to conduct witness canvassing."

By transforming the act of 'asking' into the process of 'canvassing,' the writer removes the human element and replaces it with a bureaucratic procedure.

2. Lexical Precision: The 'Bladed Article' Paradigm

Notice the avoidance of the word "knife." In high-level legal and journalistic English, specific terminology is used to categorize items rather than name them.

*"...possession of a bladed article"

This is a hyper-formal category. Using "bladed article" instead of "knife" signals that the writer is operating within a legalistic framework, emphasizing the legality of the object over its physicality.

3. Syntactic Distance through the Passive Voice

While B2 students are taught the passive voice for general use, C2 mastery uses it to strategically obscure agency or prioritize the result over the actor.

  • "A 24-year-old female deceased was located..."

Compare this to "Police found a dead woman." The C2 version utilizes a passive construction combined with a nominalized adjective ("deceased" as a noun). This creates a 'sterile' atmosphere, mirroring a coroner's report rather than a news story. This is the pinnacle of academic and professional detachment.
