🗝️ The Power of "DO NOT"
In this text, we see a pattern used to describe things that are missing or wrong. At A2 level, you need to know how to say "no" to an action.
The Pattern:
Person + do not + action
Examples from the text:
- "Some people do not like him" → They feel negative about him.
- "He does not have the right experience" → He is missing the skills.
Quick Tip: We use do not for many people (I, you, we, they). We use does not for one person (he, she, it).

Leadership Changes and Legal Investigations in the Trump Administration
Introduction
The United States government is currently making major leadership changes at the Department of Justice and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. At the same time, Congress has asked for criminal investigations into people associated with Jeffrey Epstein.
Main Body
The administration has nominated Todd Blanche to be the permanent Attorney General. Mr. Blanche, who previously defended President Trump in court, became the acting leader in April after Pam Bondi left. While the administration emphasized that Mr. Blanche is highly qualified, critics argue that he has targeted political opponents, such as former FBI Director James Comey. Furthermore, Mr. Blanche managed a proposed $1.776 billion 'Anti-Weaponization Fund' to support the president's allies, but this plan was stopped due to opposition from lawmakers and the courts.
Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee has asked the Department of Justice to investigate Frédéric Fekkai and Philip Levine for alleged sexual misconduct. These requests follow testimony from Sarah Kellen, a former assistant to Jeffrey Epstein. Ms. Kellen claimed she was abused by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, and also assaulted by Mr. Fekkai and Mr. Levine. Although the committee wants to know why police did not interview her before 2019, the accused men have denied the claims, stating the events were either consensual or completely false.
Additionally, Bill Pulte has been appointed as the acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). This decision was criticized by both Democrats and Republicans, including Senators Mitch McConnell and Thom Tillis, because Mr. Pulte lacks experience in national security. Consequently, President Trump stated that Mr. Pulte's role is temporary while the administration looks for a permanent candidate. This happens during a time of high tension, including disputes over military operations in Iran and immigration funding.
Conclusion
The administration continues to appoint loyal supporters to top positions, even as it faces strong opposition from Congress and scrutiny over the Epstein investigations.

⚡ The 'Contrast Shift': Moving from A2 to B2
At the A2 level, you likely use but for everything. To reach B2, you need to use Contrast Connectors that change the rhythm of your sentences.
Look at how this text avoids simple "but" sentences to create a more professional, academic tone:
1. The 'While' Bridge
*"While the administration emphasized that Mr. Blanche is highly qualified, critics argue..."
The Trick: Instead of saying "The administration says X, but critics say Y," start with While. This tells the reader immediately that a conflict is coming. It balances two opposing ideas in one single flow.
2. The 'Although' Pivot
*"Although the committee wants to know why police did not interview her... the accused men have denied the claims..."
The Trick: Although is used to introduce a surprising fact. It acknowledges a point (the committee's desire) but then pivots to the more important point (the denial).
3. The 'Even As' Pressure
*"...appoint loyal supporters to top positions, even as it faces strong opposition..."
The Trick: This is a high-level B2 move. Even as means "at the same time that." It is used when two things are happening simultaneously, and the second thing makes the first thing more shocking or difficult.
🛠 Quick Upgrade Guide
| A2 Style (Simple) | B2 Style (Advanced) | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| He is young, but he is smart. | While he is young, he is smart. | More fluid |

| He is winning, but he is tired. | He is winning, even as he grows tired. | More dramatic |

Administrative Transitions and Legal Referrals within the Trump Executive Branch
Introduction
The United States administration is currently undergoing significant leadership changes at the Department of Justice and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, coinciding with congressional referrals for criminal investigations into associates of Jeffrey Epstein.
Main Body
The executive branch has initiated the nomination of Todd Blanche to serve as the permanent Attorney General. Mr. Blanche, a former personal defense attorney for President Trump and previous Deputy Attorney General, assumed the acting role in April following the dismissal of Pam Bondi. The administration characterized Mr. Blanche as a highly qualified candidate; however, his tenure as acting lead has been marked by the pursuit of perceived political adversaries, including the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. Furthermore, Mr. Blanche oversaw the proposed $1.776 billion 'Anti-Weaponization Fund,' a mechanism intended to compensate allies of the president, which was subsequently abandoned following bipartisan legislative opposition and judicial intervention.
Concurrent with these appointments, the House Oversight Committee, led by Representative James Comer, has referred Frédéric Fekkai and Philip Levine to the Department of Justice for investigation into alleged sexual misconduct. These referrals originate from testimony provided by Sarah Kellen, a former assistant to Jeffrey Epstein. Ms. Kellen alleged that she was subjected to sexual and psychological abuse by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as separate assaults by Mr. Fekkai and Mr. Levine. While the committee seeks to determine why Ms. Kellen was not interviewed by law enforcement prior to 2019, the accused parties have denied the allegations, characterizing the encounters as consensual or entirely fabricated.
Simultaneously, the administration appointed Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). This appointment elicited criticism from both Democratic and Republican legislators, including Senator Mitch McConnell and Senator Thom Tillis, who cited Mr. Pulte's lack of statutory national security experience. In response to this friction, President Trump has indicated that Mr. Pulte's tenure will be temporary and that the administration is currently vetting permanent candidates. This development occurs amidst broader legislative tensions, including a House resolution demanding congressional authorization for continued military operations in Iran and disputes over the funding of immigration enforcement.
Conclusion
The administration continues to prioritize loyalty in its senior appointments while facing significant legislative resistance and ongoing scrutiny regarding the handling of the Epstein investigations.

The Architecture of Institutional Neutrality
To bridge the gap from B2 to C2, a student must move beyond meaning and enter the realm of register and rhetorical shielding. In this text, the most critical phenomenon is the use of Nominalization and Passive Agency to maintain a 'veneer of objectivity' while describing highly contentious political volatility.
⚡ The 'Clinical' Shift
Observe how the text avoids emotive verbs in favor of complex noun phrases. A B2 speaker says: "The government changed its leaders." A C2 writer constructs: "The United States administration is currently undergoing significant leadership changes."
The Linguistic Engine: By turning the action (change) into a noun (leadership changes), the writer detaches the event from a specific actor, creating a sense of historical inevitability rather than political chaos.
🔍 Dissecting 'The Distancing Lexicon'
Consider the phrase: "...a mechanism intended to compensate allies of the president, which was subsequently abandoned following bipartisan legislative opposition..."
- The Mechanism: Instead of calling it a "fund" or a "scheme," the word mechanism suggests a technical process, stripping the emotional charge from the financial allocation.
- Passive Abandonment: The fund didn't "fail"; it was "subsequently abandoned." This removes the 'blame' from the specific individuals and attributes the outcome to a general state of opposition.
🎓 C2 Synthesis: The Power of 'Attributive Qualifiers'
Note the use of "perceived political adversaries."
In B2 English, one might say "people he thought were his enemies." At C2, the adjective perceived acts as a legal and journalistic shield. It indicates that the 'adversary' status is a matter of perspective, not an objective fact. This allows the writer to report on an indictment without endorsing the motive behind it.
C2 Master-Key: To achieve mastery, stop describing what happened and start describing the framework in which it happened. Replace active verbs of conflict with nouns of process:
- Conflict Friction
- Fighting over Legislative tensions
- Saying it's not true Characterizing the encounters as fabricated
