🛑 The 'Not' Rule
To move to A2, you must know how to say "no" in a sentence. We use not to change a fact.
Look at these examples from the text:
- He did not kill her. (He is innocent)
- He was not guilty. (The court agreed he is innocent)
- The trial is not finished. (It is still happening)
How it works: Put not after the helper word (did, is, was).
Positive: The trial is finished. Negative: The trial is not finished.
⏳ Past vs. Now
Notice how we talk about things that already happened:
- died (happened in 2025)
- looked (happened in the past)
- treated (happened in the past)
Just add -ed to the action word to tell the reader the story is over.

Report on Recent Court Cases Regarding Homicide Allegations
關於謀殺指控之近期法院案件報告
Introduction
This report examines two different legal cases: a current trial in Bristol Crown Court concerning the death of a child, and a coroner's report in Western Australia regarding a cold case from 2010.
本報告分析兩起不同的法律案件:一起是布里斯托刑事法院目前正在審理的兒童死亡案,另一起則是西澳大利亞州關於 2010 年一起懸案的驗屍官報告。
Main Body
In Bristol Crown Court, a trial has started regarding the death of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who died from a chest wound in December 2025. The defendant, a sixteen-year-old boy, has pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter. The prosecution claims that the incident happened during a fake hunting game, where the defendant tried to make the victim jump. However, the defendant gave conflicting stories to his friends and the police, claiming at times that it was an accident and at other times that it was a deliberate stabbing. Medical evidence shows that the death was caused by a pierced heart and punctured lung, which required only a small amount of force.
Meanwhile, a coroner's inquiry in Western Australia has finished regarding the 2010 death of Josh Warneke. Coroner Ros Fogliani decided that the death was an unlawful killing, likely caused by a heavy blow to the head. The inquiry emphasized serious failures by the Western Australia Police, such as the failure to protect evidence at the crime scene and the use of unfair questioning methods. For example, Gene Gibson, a Pintupi man, was interviewed for six hours without a lawyer or a translator, which led to a conviction that was later cancelled in 2017. Consequently, the coroner has asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate possible crimes, noting that the first investigation lacked enough resources and professional care.
Conclusion
The trial in Bristol is still continuing, while the Warneke case has moved from a coroner's finding to a legal review by prosecutors.
布里斯托的審理仍在繼續,而 Warneke 案則已從驗屍官的調查結果轉入檢察官的法律審查階段。

🛠️ The "Power Shift": Moving from Simple to Complex Descriptions
At the A2 level, you usually describe things using simple patterns: "The police made mistakes" or "The boy told different stories."
To reach B2, you need to use Nominalization. This means turning an action (a verb) into a thing (a noun). It makes your English sound more professional, objective, and precise.
🔍 Spotting the Shift in the Text
Look at how the article describes the police errors. Instead of saying "The police failed to protect evidence," it uses:
"...serious failures by the Western Australia Police"
And instead of saying "The first investigation was not professional," it says:
"...the first investigation lacked... professional care."
📈 How to apply this (The B2 Formula)
| A2 Style (Verb-based) | B2 Style (Noun-based) | Why it's better |
|---|---|---|
| He told stories that didn't match. | He gave conflicting stories. | More precise vocabulary. |
| The court is deciding if he is guilty. | The conviction was later cancelled. | Focuses on the legal result. |
| They didn't protect the evidence. | The failure to protect evidence. | Sounds like an official report. |
💡 Coach's Tip for Fluency
When you want to describe a problem or a result, try to find the noun for that action.
- Instead of: "I am worried because the weather changed."
- Try: "The change in weather is worrying."
By shifting the focus from who did it to what happened, you bridge the gap between basic conversation and academic fluency.

Analysis of Recent Judicial Proceedings Concerning Homicide Allegations and Coronial Findings.
關於謀殺指控與死因裁判官調查結果之近期司法程序分析
Introduction
This report examines two distinct legal matters: a current trial in Bristol Crown Court involving the death of a minor, and a coronial referral in Western Australia regarding a cold case from 2010.
本報告審視兩宗不同的法律事項:一宗是布里斯托刑事法院目前審理關於一名未成年人死亡的案件,另一宗則是西澳大利亞州關於 2010 年一宗懸案的死因裁判官轉介案件。
Main Body
In the jurisdiction of Bristol Crown Court, proceedings have commenced regarding the death of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who succumbed to a single thoracic puncture wound in December 2025. The defendant, a sixteen-year-old male, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of murder and manslaughter. The prosecution posits that the incident occurred during a simulated hunting activity, wherein the defendant attempted to induce a flinch response in the victim. Conversely, the defendant's subsequent statements to peers and police provided contradictory accounts, ranging from an accidental collision with the weapon to a deliberate act of stabbing. Pathological evidence indicates that the fatality resulted from a pierced heart and punctured lung, requiring a minimum application of mild force.
Parallel to this, a coronial inquiry in Western Australia has concluded regarding the 2010 death of Josh Warneke. Coroner Ros Fogliani has determined that the decedent's death was an unlawful homicide, likely resulting from blunt force trauma to the cranium. The inquiry highlighted significant institutional failures within the Western Australia Police, specifically the absence of forensic preservation at the crime scene and the employment of coercive interrogation techniques. The latter involved the detention of Gene Gibson, a Pintupi man, who was subjected to a six-hour interview without legal representation or a translator, leading to a conviction that was subsequently quashed in 2017. The coroner has now referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions to explore potential indictable offenses, noting that the initial investigation was characterized by inadequate resourcing and forensic negligence.
Conclusion
The Bristol trial remains ongoing, while the Warneke case has transitioned from a coronial finding to a prosecutorial review.
布里斯托的審理仍在進行中,而 Warneke 案則已從死因裁判官的認定轉為檢察局的審核。

The Architecture of Nominalization and Latinate Precision
To bridge the gap from B2 to C2, a student must migrate from narrative prose (which describes actions) to analytical prose (which describes concepts). This text is a masterclass in Nominalization—the process of turning verbs and adjectives into nouns to achieve an objective, detached, and authoritative tone.
◈ The Shift: From Action to Entity
Observe how the text avoids simple storytelling. Instead of saying "The police did not preserve the crime scene," the author writes:
*"...the absence of forensic preservation at the crime scene..."
By transforming the action (preserve) into a noun phrase (absence of forensic preservation), the writer shifts the focus from the actor to the failure. This is the hallmark of C2 academic and legal English: the depersonalization of agency.
◈ Lexical Sophistication: The Latinate Register
C2 mastery requires the precise deployment of Latin-derived terminology to eliminate ambiguity. Note the strategic use of these terms over their Germanic equivalents:
- Succumbed (instead of died): Suggests a process of giving way to a fatal injury.
- Posits (instead of says/claims): Suggests the formulation of a theoretical premise for a legal argument.
- Decedent (instead of dead person): A clinical, legal designation that strips away emotion to maintain objectivity.
- Quashed (instead of cancelled/overturned): A specific legal term of art meaning to render a previous judgment void.
◈ Syntactic Compression
Look at the phrase: "...the employment of coercive interrogation techniques."
In B2 English, this might be: "They used techniques to force the man to talk."
C2 Analysis:
- The Employment (Noun) Replaces "They used".
- Coercive (Adjective) Replaces "to force".
- Interrogation Techniques (Compound Noun) Replaces "talk".
This compression allows the writer to pack a massive amount of semantic information into a single prepositional phrase, creating the "dense" texture required for high-level judicial and academic reporting.
