Police identified Heuermann by combining old witness reports about a specific Chevrolet Avalanche with cellular data. Investigators discovered that 'burner' phones used to contact victims were often located near Heuermann's home in Massapequa Park and his office in Manhattan. Furthermore, forensic evidence, such as DNA found in trash, provided the biological proof needed to link him to the victims.
